Celebrate Asian Heritage Month: Discovering Asian Stories Through Literature

During the month of May, people all over the world celebrate the history, heritage, and achievements of Asians. The month-long celebration highlights the contributions of Asian Canadians while also calling attention to the struggles and biases that Asians have endured throughout history. Literature is a powerful tool for learning about and appreciating Asian culture because it provides insight into Asian peoples' experiences, histories, and worldviews. In this post, we'll discuss the meaning of Asian Heritage Month and recommend some excellent books.

The United States is the birthplace of Asian Heritage Month, which was first recognized in 1977 to honour the first Japanese immigrants arriving on May 7, 1843. Since then, it has been adopted by many nations and recognized officially in Canada since 2002. The month is a time to honour the many Asian communities across the globe, including those of China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, India, Pakistan, and many more.

Literature is one of the most powerful means of establishing a personal connection to one's Asian roots. Books provide a one-of-a-kind opportunity to gain insight into the lives of others, develop compassion, and broaden one's worldview. Books written by Asian authors are a great way to learn more about the complex history, culture, and current events that make up Asia. As a bonus, they can aid in dispelling myths and misunderstandings about Asian cultures and promote a deeper appreciation for the wide variety within Asian communities.
