Maximizing Your Library Experience: Understanding Course Reserves and Holds

As a student, utilizing the resources available at the library can be a game-changer for your academic success. One such resource is the Course Reserves and Holds room, where you can find all the books reserved for your courses and books requested by students. In this blog post, we'll take a closer look at what these are, how they work, and how you can use them to your advantage.

What are Course Reserves?
Course Reserves are a collection of books that are specifically set aside by the library for a particular course. These books are selected by your instructors and are meant to support the curriculum. They are usually located in a separate room within the library and can be used by students without the need to officially check them out. This means you can study or refer to these books while you're in the library. You can also use the self-checkout inside the room to check them out to your account so that you can use them in other places at the university, but be aware that these books have short-term loan periods.

What are Holds?
Holds are books that students have requested to check out from the library. Once a requested book is available, the library staff will place it in the Course Reserves room, and you'll receive an email notification that it's ready for pickup. To retrieve your hold, simply go to the Course Reserves room and look for your last name on the slip placed in the book. From there, you can self-checkout the book and take it with you to study elsewhere.

How to Use Course Reserves and Holds to Your Advantage

Plan ahead: Before you head to the library, check the Course Reserves and Holds list to see if any of the books you need are available. This will save you time and ensure that you have access to the resources you need. For checking if the book you want is available, you can go to the Library's main page: Geoffrey R. Weller Library and click on Course Reserves: there you can look for your course and see if the book is available in the library.

Utilize the in-library resources: Take advantage of the fact that you can use the Course Reserves books while you're in the library. If you need a quick reference, this is a great opportunity to study and reference materials without having to check them out, and you can also use the Book Scanner to send some pages to your email to make it even easier.

Request books ahead of time: If you know you'll need a specific book for an upcoming project or assignment, request it as soon as possible. This will give you a better chance of getting the book before someone else does.

In conclusion, the Course Reserves room at the library is a valuable resource for students. By understanding how it works and utilizing it to your advantage, you can make the most of your time at the library and achieve academic success. So next time you visit the library, be sure to check out the Course Reserves and Holds room and see how it can help you reach your goals; it`s located beside the Library Services desk in room 05-136A.
