Giving Tuesday an opportunity to giving and learning

by Lucas Rigamont Braganca on 2023-11-24T12:00:00-08:00 | 0 Comments

Giving Tuesday is a global social movement and  an opportunity to us to give. It not only encourages people to engage in acts of kindness and charitable giving but also give as an opportunity to learn about giving. This day provides an opportunity for us to come together and support our community through generous acts. In the spirit of Giving Tuesday, I would like to suggest the following books that are related to the theme of generosity, kindness, and charitable giving that you can find here at Geoffrey R. Weller Library, it`s a chance to learn more about the theme through some books.

Cover ArtThe Renewal of Generosity by Arthur W. Frank
Call Number: R727.3 .F66 2004
ISBN: 9780226260150
Publication Date: 2004-05-01
"The Renewal of Generosity evokes medicine as the face-to-face encounter that comes before and after diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and surgeries. Frank calls upon the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, philosopher Emmanuel Levinas, and literary critic Mikhail Bakhtin to reflect on stories of ill people, doctors, and nurses who transform demoralized medicine into caring relationships. He presents their stories as a source of consolation for both the ill and the professional and as an impetus to changing medical systems. Frank shows how generosity is being renewed through dialogue that is more than the exchange of information. Dialogue is an ethic and an ideal for people on both sides of the medical encounter who want to offer more to those they meet and who want their own lives enriched in the process." "The Renewal of Generosity views illness and medical work with grace and compassion, making an invaluable contribution to expanding our vision of suffering and healing."

Cover ArtThe Culture of Giving by Ilana Krausman Ben-Amos
Call Number: HV245 .B46 2008
ISBN: 9780521867238
Publication Date: 2008-03-17
"An innovative study of gift-giving, informal support and charity in England between the late sixteenth and early eighteenth centuries. Ilana Krausman Ben-Amos examines the adaptation and transformation of varied forms of informal help, challenging long-held views and assumptions about the decline of voluntary giving and personal obligations in the transition from medieval to modern times. Merging historical research with insights drawn from theories of gift-giving, the book analyses practices of informal support within varied social networks, associations and groups over the entire period. It argues that the processes entailed in the Reformation, state formation and the implementation of the poor laws, as well as market and urban expansion, acted as powerful catalysts for many forms of informal help. Within certain boundaries, the early modern era witnessed the diversification, increase and invigoration, rather than the demise, of gift-giving and informal support."

"According to Greek methodology mankind's first benefactor was the Titan, Prometheus, who gave fire, previously the exclusive possession of the gods, to mortal man." With these words the esteemed scholar Robert Bremner presents the first full-fledged history of attitudes toward charity and philanthropy. Giving is a perfect complement to his earlier work The Discovery of Poverty in the United States. The word philanthropy has been translated in a variety of ways: as a loving human disposition, loving kindness, love of mankind, charity, fostering mortal man, championing mankind, and helping people. Bremner's book covers all of these meanings in rich detail." "Bremner describes the ancient world and classical attitudes toward giving and begging; Middle Ages and early modern times, emphasizing hospitals and patients and donors and attributes of charity; the eighteenth century and the age of benevolence; the nineteenth century and the growth of the concept of public relief and social policy; and a careful multiple chapter review of the twentieth century. Bremner reviews the act of giving in such comparative contexts as London, England and Kasrilevke, Russia with such figures as Thomas Carlyle, Charles Dickens, and Sholem Aleichem, as well as the more familiar wealthy industrialist/philanthropists, forming part of the narrative." "The final chapters bring the story up to date, discussing the relationships of modern philanthropy and organized charity, and the uses of philanthropy in education and the arts. Bremner has an astonishing knowledge of the cultural context and the economic contents of philanthropy. As a result, this volume is intriguing as well as important history, written with lively style and wit." "Whether the reader is a professional in the so-called "third stream" or "independent sector," or simply a citizen wondering just what the act of giving and the spirit of receiving is all about, Giving will be compelling reading."

Cover ArtGiving for Social Change by Althea K. Nagai; Robert Lerner; Stanley Rothman
Call Number: HV91 .N23 1994
ISBN: 9780275946975
Publication Date: 1994-01-30
"This study shows how philanthropic foundations and their leaders help shape the American political agenda. The book revolves around financial leaders as elite members of a strategic sector in American society rather than as an extension of the WASP establishment. Foundation leaders, the authors indicate, are the most diverse and politically polarized of American elite groups. However, using a survey of the ideological views of the foundation elite and an examination of the foundations' public policy grants, the authors show that despite the prominence of a few conservative foundations, a significant number of foundations attempt to push the national agenda in a liberal direction. The opening chapter presents a historical overview of philanthropy and social change. Ensuing chapters discuss issues surrounding foundations such as social order, organizational dilemmas, and competing philosophies. Four appendices, including a survey methodology and samples of American elites, complete the text. This volume is an important addition to the literature on foundations and will be of great interest to public policy professionals, political scientists, and those who track the direction of the national agenda."

These books offer valuable insights into fundraising, generosity, and the impact of charitable giving, providing inspiration and guidance for individuals and organizations looking to make a positive difference in our communities.
