The UNBC Library is excited to announce the implementation of OpenAthens Compass, going live on August 5, 2025.
OpenAthens Compass provides a more efficient and secure way to log in to UNBC Library journal articles, databases, and other electronic resources. OpenAthens will replace our longstanding off-campus access system, EZProxy, which we’ve used for nearly 20 years
OpenAthens Compass will allow users the option to log in directly from journal and database websites with their UNBC login credentials, providing a more streamlined way for our students and faculty to access UNBC Library resources found online.
Users will only need to log in once to start an 8-hour long OpenAthens Compass session. This means fewer frustrating automatic log outs for our users.
OpenAthens Compass is modern authentication software with enhanced privacy and security features and BC-FIPPA compliance.
OpenAthens Compass uses a different technology to manage access to resources, which will change the prefix (the first part) of UNBC Library permanent links to electronic journals and databases.
Current prefix: https://prxy.lib.unbc.ca/login?url=
New OpenAthens prefix: https://go.openathens.net/redirector/unbc.ca?url=
Permanent links in syllabi and bookmarks will need to be updated. Any links to our Library Search catalogue (https://unbc.on.worldcat.org/) will not need to be changed. We will work with faculty to help update links so students will have seamless access to Library resources. A full informational guide about the OpenAthens Compass system and transition is forthcoming to help ease the transition for both faculty and students.
