New Library Search Launching May 1!

The Library is excited to announce the implementation of our new library services platform, OCLC’s WorldShare Management Services on May 1, 2023. This modern system will streamline processes and improve the search experience of staff, faculty, and students alike. You can read more about why we chose OCLC WMS.

What can you expect?

The current tools used to search our collection, the Summon General Search and Classic Catalogue, will be replaced with a unified library search under the General Search tab. The new library search will allow users to search across our electronic and print collection, request items, and submit course reserves all within one single interface. Iterative changes based on user feedback will occur over the summer months to ensure that the search interface best meets our users needs.

Documentation, tutorials, and FAQs will be introduced prior to the Fall semester to help our users adapt to our new system. Information about these tools will be sent out via email and available at https://library.unbc.ca/

After May 1, some functions may not behave as expected. Please help us by reporting problems to library@unbc.ca or using the Report a Problem form. Our team will be working hard to ensure our data is correct and the system is implemented with as few issues as possible.

Interlibrary Loan transitioned to the new system in June. For more information about how to request Interlibrary Loans please see the Interlibrary Loan page.

Here's an overview of the changes:

The General Search, Databases, and Course Reserves tabs have changed, and the Classic Catalogue search has been retired.

Our new database list is easier to use. The A-Z buttons go to an alphabetized list:

The list of databases starts with the letter B, and each database shows the access permissions (a lock icon for "Current UNBC users only" and an unlocked icon for "Open access"), the database name, alternate names, and a short description. On the right side of the page are sections to highlight Popular Databases and New/Trial Databases; neither of these sections list any databases.

The subject drop-down menu on the Databases tab will take you to a list of databases that are good resources for that subject:

There are drop-down menus along the top to choose from a list of subjects, database types, and vendors, as well as a search box. The list of databases starts with the letter A, and each database shows the access permissions (a lock icon for "Current UNBC users only" and an unlocked icon for "Open access"), the database name, alternate names, and a short description. On the right side of the page are sections to highlight Subject Experts (none have been listed for this subject) as well as Guides for this topic (this screenshot lists the UNBC Map collection guide).
