The festival of Nowruz, meaning 'new day,' celebrates spring's arrival and is a significant celebration for many communities around the world. Throughout history, this celebration has brought communities together across countries and regions.
The Nowruz celebration is particularly meaningful for the country's Iranian, Afghan, Tajik, Kurdish, and Azerbaijani and Ghazagh communities. These groups have brought their unique traditions and customs to Canada and have been celebrating Nowruz in various forms for many years.
The return of spring was seen as having great spiritual significance, symbolizing good throughout history, the celebration of good triumphing over evil and joy over sorrow.
The Nowruz celebration in Canada typically includes a range of activities, such as music and dance performances, traditional food, and family gatherings. One of the most important customs is the setting of a haft-seen table, which is decorated with seven items that begin with the Persian letter "S." These items represent different aspects of life, such as rebirth, health, happiness, and prosperity.
Not only can Nowruz provide an opportunity to enjoy ancient cultural customs and traditional music, dance, rituals, foods, and story-telling, but it also promotes peace and solidarity throughout communities and strengthens deep-rooted friendships and exchanges.
This year, Iranian women have a broader understanding of Nowruz, along with all its values and beauty. Trees sprout green leaves when they rebloom, promising these women a new beginning. They are assured that the seeds of what they stood for in protest are sprouting. Nature gives them hope that one day light will find its way to restore greenness, and no darkness will last forever.
We are excited to have the Women, Life, Freedom library display section at the main library desk.
This exhibit is a deeply emotional and thought-provoking tribute to the courage and resilience of Iranian women. The books exhibited in this display take us on a journey through the history of the women's rights movement in Iran and shed light on the ongoing struggles that Iranian women face in their daily lives.
The Women, Life, Freedom display is a testament to the power of human spirit and the resilience of the human heart. It is a reminder that no matter how dark things may seem, there is always hope for a brighter future. And it is a tribute to the strength and courage of the women of Iran, who continue to inspire us all with their unwavering commitment to justice and freedom.
This exhibit is made possible through the contributions of UNBC students and employees who have come together to honor the struggles and triumphs of Iranian women. We invite you to join us in this journey of discovery and reflection and to bear witness to the incredible spirit of these amazing women by reading these amazing selected books available on the display.
