May 29th to June 4th marks National AccessAbility Week (NAAW) in Canada. The theme for NAAW 2022 is Inclusive from the Start.
During NAAW, the government of Canada encourages us to "Celebrate the valuable contributions and leadership of Canadians with disabilities; highlight the work of individuals, organizations and communities who are removing barriers; and reflect on our ongoing efforts to become a better, more accessible, more disability inclusive Canada."
About the theme, #inclusivefromthestart the NAAW website states: "Imagine a Canada where no one is left out. A Canada that does not just accommodate disability, but one that is disability inclusive from the start. That is the Canada we are creating – for everyone."
The week was opened on May 26th and 27th the Canadian Congress on Disability Inclusion (CCDI 2022) opened the event, and you can see Minister Qualtrough's opening address here.
Keep an eye on the NAAW website for events coming up throughout the week! Join in the "conversation surrounding creating an accessible and inclusive Canada from the start."
On Wednesday, June 1st, don a red shirt for the "Easter Seal's Red Shirt Day of action for accessibility and inclusion."
From the Red Shirt Day website:
"Red Shirt Day (of Action for AccessAbility and Inclusion) is a day when people across Canada come together and wear red in schools, workplaces and spaces everywhere in order to create a visible display of solidarity: to show their support for persons and families who are living with disabilities, celebrate the achievements of people living with disabilities, and to pledge their commitment to help create a fully accessible and inclusive society that honours and values the contributions of people of all abilities in all aspects of life in Canada."
Check out the Easter Seal's Red Shirt Day resources for free webinars, reading lists, and even podcasts on creating inclusive employment and workplaces.
So, this NAAW, we encourage you to get involved! Check out some webinars, wear red on June 1st, and make a pledge about how you are going to help make your community more accessible and inclusive.
