Libraries are no longer just a place for books, but also a hub of technology and innovation. With the advent of new technologies, libraries are now equipped with self-checkout systems, making it easier for patrons to borrow materials. Here at Geoffrey R. Weller Library, we have self-checkouts on the 1st floor (across from the Library Services Desk), in the Course Reserves room, and on the 2nd floor, beside the 2nd floor door.

Self-checkout systems at libraries offer numerous benefits, including increased efficiency and convenience for patrons. With these systems, patrons can check out their own materials without waiting in line for assistance from library staff. This can save time, especially during peak hours, and help reduce lines and wait times.

Overall, self-checkout systems at libraries offer numerous benefits to both patrons and library staff. These systems increase efficiency, convenience, and flexibility, while also reducing wait times and minimizing errors. With the continued advancement of technology, new systems like self-checkouts bring a new level of convenience to library services.

Here is a step-by-step guide for how to use the self-checkout systems:

There are three self-checkout devices in the Library:

1st floor:

  • Across from the Library Services desk,
  • Course Reserves room.

2nd floor:

  • Beside the 2nd floor entrance.

Self-checkout instructions:

  1. Scan the back of your UNBC ID card under the blue screen.
  2. Place the item on the station as shown below to deactivate. Ensure the binding of the book is resting against the guide and the barcode is facing up to the scanner.

  1. Slide the item towards the barcode scanner. Keep sliding until the red scanning line crosses the barcode. You will hear a beep when the barcode is scanned, then wait.
  2. Leave the item in place and wait 3 seconds for deactivation. Wait for the green light and then the confirming “clunk.” Set aside item and scan the next item.
  3. Finish your transaction. After all items have been deactivated, you will see the “FINISH” button on the screen to the right. Tap it to end the transaction.
