Canadian Census Analyser

Notes:

  • See instructions below to do this exercise.
  • This exercise requires you to retrieve 2011 Census data.  Note that 2011 NHS data is also available through the Canadian Census Analyser.

Exercise: Use the Canadian Census Analyser (instructions below) to retrieve 2011 Census data for the total male population and the total female population for the census tract in which the UNBC campus is located.

Retrieving 2016 Census Data from the Canadian Census Analyser

The following instructions are written to compete the above exercise.  They will need to be adapted to retrieve other levels of geography.  Before starting this exercise, create a new directory (tut4) in your home directory (n : \username).

Access

  1. Open the library web site.
  2. Go to COLLECTIONS --> Data & Statistics --> Canadian Data.
  3. Click on Canadian Census Analyzer.
  4. Read and understand the "Terms of Use Info," and then click on Canadian Census Analyzer @ CHASS.
  5. Authenticate with your UNBC account information, and click on Submit.

Retrieving data at the census tract level -- 2016 Census

  1. Click on Census Tract under by Census Geography:.
  2. Click on 2016.
  3. Uncheck A under by Name, click on the by Province tab, and check the desired province.
  4. Select the desired CMA or CA in the resulting list.
  5. Select the desired census characteristics in Step 2.
  6. If you are retrieving data for a specific census tract, enter the census tract UID in the Optionally filter CT names box.
  7. Select how you would like the data to appear (columns or rows) under Census variables to be listed as:.
  8. Select an output format under Select the output format:. (MS Excel ready recommended.)
  9. Click on Submit Query.
  10. Follow the directions to download the file(s), and place it/them in your new directory.  Note that if you selected Comma-Separated Values (CSV) file for spreadsheet as an output format you will need to download both the Data and Header files.  The Header file provides the column titles, without which the data would be meaningless.
  11. You will need to clean the data by increasing the number of decimals displayed for the census tract UID(s) (select the relevant cells, and select Number from the Number drop-down menu under the Excel Home tab), renaming headings, and adjusting and deleting columns/rows as necessary.

Important: Note that standard Statistics Canada products, such as the census and NHS data are disseminated under the terms of the Statistics Canada Open Licence Agreement.  However, there are other products to which we have access through Statistics Canada's Data Liberation Initiative (DLI), such as Public Use Microdata Files (PUMFs), for which there are different terms of use.  Please contact me if you have any questions of how you may use these products.
