Data and Statistics: Data

A guide to help you find data and statistics - useful to students and researchers across many disciplines

Canadian Data

Statistics Canada also creates Public Use Microdata Files (PUMFs) that can be downloaded and analysed in the statistical package of your choice. Depending on your research needs one of the following options will best suit your discovery and download needs

These files are created by removing outliers, removing some variables, and combining variables to make sure no individuals can be identified within the data. Because of this, there are some limitations to the questions you can answer with these datasets. If the variable you need isn't available in the PUMF you can get in touch with the Research Data Centre on campus, who can help you determine if accessing the full data file is what you need and will guide you through the RDC application process

Provincial Data

British Columbia provides thousands of data sets through its Open Data Catalogue, which are separate from the data available from Statistics Canada

Other Data Sources

UNBC is a member of ICPSR (Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research). Here you can find data from research projects and government agencies from all over the world, but with a focus on American content. These datasets are also available for download to analyze with your statistical software of choice. This is an excellent resource if your topic of interest isn't covered in a product from Statistics Canada, as long as studying another country is an option for your research.
