Links to the Library Search or Database list

Links to searches or search results in the Library Search will not change. These are always the best type of link to use when available; the Library manages updating the full text links so you don't have to worry about it.

For example, this link will continue to work: https://unbc.on.worldcat.org/oclc/10308229295

Links to databases also aren't changing. For example, this link will continue to work: https://libguides.unbc.ca/az/academic-search-complete

How to create new links

Use the Athenizer to create links to content in Library resources.

Copy and paste a persistent link to an article, ebook, or film here to generate a link that can be used by all current UNBC students, faculty, and staff.

First, take a look at the link:

Is it for EBSCO, Gale, Kanopy, ProQuest, or Taylor & Francis? These URLs do not need to be Athenized. See the Special cases section below for directions to create those links.

Does it start with https://prxy.lib.unbc.ca/login?url=? If so, remove that part. Example: https://prxy.lib.unbc.ca/login?url=https://www.jstor.org/ needs to be https://www.jstor.org/

Does it contain prxy.lib.unbc.ca elsewhere? If so, remove that part and change any previous dashes to periods. Example: https://www-jstor-org.prxy.lib.unbc.ca/ needs to be https://www.jstor.org/

Once the link is 'clean', paste it into the box below to get an Athenized link:

For example:

Entered URL: https://www.jstor.org/stable/24397619

Athenized URL: https://go.openathens.net/redirector/unbc.ca?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jstor.org%2Fstable%2F24397619

You can then use that link anywhere, such as in a course syllabus or reading list, or an email to someone else at UNBC.

Always test these links before sharing them!

Do you have a lot of links?

Our Syllabus Service is able to update them for you to share with your students.

Permalinks provided by databases

Some databases have permalink options within their platform. These are already formatted correctly, and don't need to be edited.

Look for a button or link using wording like "share," "get link," "copy link," or something similar.

Here's how to get permalinks from some popular databases:

  • EBSCO: look for the "Permalink" button
  • Gale: look for the "Get link" button
  • Ebook Central: you can copy the URL directly from your browser's address bar. For example, https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/unbc-ebooks/detail.action?docID=6976341
  • ProQuest: look for the "Copy URL" button
  • Kanopy: You can copy the URL directly from your browser's address bar. For example, https://unbc.kanopy.com/watch/video/113251 or https://www.kanopy.com/en/unbc/watch/video/113251

Special cases

Links to some providers do not need to be Athenized. Instead, they include an institution ID to provide access.

Please ensure these strings are included in your links to the following providers:

  • EBSCO (see note below)
    • https://research.ebsco.com/c/4zr4jb/search?db=[database code]
    • Example: https://research.ebsco.com/c/4zr4jb/search?db=a9h or https://research.ebsco.com/c/4zr4jb/search/details/n3voonsq3f?db=a9h
  • Gale
    • https://link.gale.com/apps/[database code]?u=unorthbc
    • Example: https://link.gale.com/apps/AONE?u=unorthbc
  • Kanopy
    • https://unbc.kanopy.com/
    • Example: https://unbc.kanopy.com/watch/video/113251
  • ProQuest
    • https://www.proquest.com/[database code]/advanced?accountid=14601
    • Example: https://www.proquest.com/canadiannews/advanced?accountid=14601
  • ProQuest ebooks
    • https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/unbc-ebooks
    • Example: https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/unbc-ebooks/detail.action?docID=6976341
  • Taylor & Francis
    • examples coming soon

A note about EBSCO links:

Until  December 22, 2025, access to EBSCO's medical databases (APA PsycArticles, APA PsycInfo, Biomedical Research Collection, CINAHL, and Medline) will use the URL syntax https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?authtype=shib&custid=s5672293&profile=classic_ex&groupid=main&defaultdb=[database code] (Note the sections "authtype=shib&custid=s5672293&profile=classic_ex")
