Streaming and Screening Videos

Streaming Videos

General Workflow:

1.The request for a film is received.

2. The vendor is contacted.

3. The price and license are negotiated.

4.The film is added to the UNBC Library catalogue

5.The film is removed from the UNBC Library catalogue when the license expires.

Terminology

Agents Involved:

  • Distributor: An individual or company who are responsible for a films marketing. This includes advertising and deciding how and where the film is shown.
  • Producer: The person responsible for the business aspects of making a film. This includes the films budget, hiring decisions, and schedule.
  • Director: The person responsible for the creative aspects of making a film. This includes the vision for the film, and instructing cast and crew.

Digital Locks: Technologies that prevent access to or use of a digital work. Also called technological protection measures (TPMs).

Digital Site License (DSL): The license that allows films to be streamed at UNBC.

Kaltura: A video hosting platform. Kaltura is integrated with Moodle and often used in UNBC courses. The UNBC Library will upload films that are UNBC hosted to Kaltura.

Perpetual Access: Long term/permanent access. Perpetual Access is also sometimes referred to as "Life of File." This means that the UNBC Library will maintain access to a film for as long as the file format is supported (for example mp4).

Public Performance Rights (PPR): permission for a video to be shown outside of a classroom context. PPRs can vary by provider: they may allow for a film to be shown for only campus events for UNBC members, or for public screenings.

Streaming vs. Screening:

  • Streaming: asynchronous online access to a video. Individuals can log in and play the video any time.
  • Screening: showing a video to an audience gathered at a specific time and place. This is usually in person, but some providers  support virtual screenings.

Vendor Hosted vs UNBC Hosted:

  • Vendor Hosted: When streaming access is provided directly from a vendor's website. For example, when a patron clicks "view now" on a film licensed through Kanopy, they will be redirected to the Kanopy website.
  • UNBC Hosted: UNBC will host a film by adding it to Kaltura when a vendor does not provide streaming access on their own website.
