Knowledge Synthesis Guide

Overview of evidence synthesis steps and resources to assist researchers conducting reviews

Using a Tool for Reference Screening

Most reference or citation screening tools utilize the same general process:

Load your references
  • Import citations from any reference management software or database
  • Upload references and full-text documents
  • Automatically archive all searches
  • Full duplicate detection and removal
Create your forms
  • Build forms for screening and data extraction
  • Create reusable form libraries (application dependent)
Lay out your workflow and assign reviewers
  • Use any number of forms in any order
  • Assign reviewers to study pages
  • Set custom inclusion/exclusion protocols
  • Configure keyword highlighting
Monitor and tune your review
  • Monitor real-time study progress (reference progress, reviewer/data conflicts, included/excluded reference counts
  • Monitor the review process (Kappa interrater reliability scoring, reviewer participation reports, track time spent by participants)
Export your results
  • Included/excluded study lists and reports
  • PRISMA flowchart automation
  • Comprehensive data tables
  • Full report customization
  • Export to Word, Excel, and reference tools

Free Screening Tools

"Freemium" Screening Tools

If you do not have access to funding for a paid subscription screening application, there are "freemium" applications that provide limited functionality with a free account. The usual limitation is on the number of reviews, which makes the freemium option an attractive choice for students conducting one review for course work.

UNBC Library does not offer support nor facilitate access for these tools.

Open Access Screening Tools

These are free, open-access screening tools. UNBC does not offer support of training for these tools.
