Kent Sedgwick fonds (2012.13)

Summary: Kent Sedgwick was an author, professor, urban planner, and prominent local historian of Prince George. The J. Kent Sedgwick fonds documents Sedgwick’s research in the history and geography of the BC Central Interior. It also reflects his work as a Prince George Senior City Planner, his involvement in local community organizations, and his teaching at CNC and UNBC.

Physical extent: 5 metres of textual records and includes 8,000+ photos, 137 maps, and more

Dates: 1941-2011

Access: The majority of the photographs/slides have been digitized and are available online. A very limited number of select other items have also been digitized. In-person visits are typically necessary to access this archival holding.

G. Gary Runka fonds (2020.4)

Summary: As the first general manager of the BC Land Commission, Gary Runka played a pivotal role in developing the Agricultural Land Reserve. The G. Gary Runka fonds encompasses Runka’s extensive work in the field of land use planning and natural resource management. After serving as Chair of the Agricultural Land Commission from 1975 to 1979, Runka went on to establish his own consulting firm. Over the next 33 years, GG Runka Land Sense Ltd. served over 681 clients, including governments, universities, corporations, community groups, businesses and private individuals. However, Runka never wavered from his support for the ALR. At his untimely death in 2013, he was working in opposition to the Site C dam project due to the loss of over 5,000 hectares of high capability agricultural land.

Physical Extent: 20 m of textual records and other material spanning three library bays, 7423 photographs, and more than 500 maps

Access: Only a small percentage of this holding are available digitally: digitized speech manuscripts, digitized print photographs, born-digital electronic records, and a digitized film. In-person visits are typically necessary to access this archival holding. Some files are restricted and have conditional protocols for access.

Chander Suri fonds (1996.8)

Summary: The Chander Suri fonds consists of land planning records created and accumulated by Chander Suri over the course of his career. Chander Suri was the Regional District Planner for Fraser Fort George Regional District (circa 1969-1976) and an urban planning consultant based in Prince George thereafter. Textual records comprise planning and development documents, socio-economic studies, various reports, contracts, and regulations. The cartographic material includes regional maps, First Nation development plans, and plans for Prince George area private property and public infrastructure.

Physical Extent: 3 metres of unprocessed archival textual material, 70 photographs, and approximately 2,000 archival maps

Dates: ca. 1960-2000

Access: This fonds is currently undergoing processing in 2023-2024 and information about the fonds in the NBCA archival database is limited. An archivist can facilitate access to this material via an in-person research visit.

UNBC School of Planning and Sustainability fonds (2023.5)

Summary: The UNBC School of Planning and Sustainability fonds consists of maps, plans, and drawings collected by the School. The majority of these maps reflect the planning history of the City of Prince George and include large format, hand-drawn plans created by the City Planning Department from the 1970s and 1980s. Maps from City of Prince George Official Community Plans are also included.

Trelle Morrow Collection (2007.47)

Summary: Trelle Morrow, B.A., B. Arch. established a practice in Prince George in 1956 and worked on many local and northern projects until he retired in 1997. The Trelle Morrow Collection includes an audiocassette and a CD copy of an interview conducted by Kent Sedgwick with Trelle Morrow on the history of architectural design in Prince George. This interview was the basis for J. Kent Sedgwick's publication Reflections on Architects and Architecture in Prince George 1950-2000 published by the College of New Caledonia (2007).
